After the February announcement that General Motors was planning on dumping Saab, the American parent appears to have come to terms with a suitor. supercar manufacturer Koenigsegg has agreed to take on the Swedish brand.
Both parties have signed a memorandum of understanding, with anticipation of the deal closing by the end of September. Terms of the deal include $600 million in financing provided by the European Investment Bank, and secured by the Swedish government.
Saab operations will continue in full, thanks to funding from both Koenigsegg and GM. Because of this, Saab intends to continue with the launch of "several new products that are in the final stages of development." In addition to GM continuing to provide platforms for the time being, Saab plans on building the next generation Saab 9-5 in Trollhättan, Sweden. The new 9-5 is due for a Frankfurt introduction later this year. The larger 9-5 should be about six inches longer, with a wide variety of powerful engines, all-wheel drive, and LED taillights.
What is uncertain is if these future plans include bringing the Saab Quant electric concept closer towards production. Koenigsegg is believed to be excited about the 500 kilometer-range vehicle's potential, especially considering its reported recharge time of 20 minutes.
The supercar manufacturer also plans to ramp up Saab production to 150,000 units per year by 2011, up from 20,000. That reason alone could have been enough to win the backing of the Swedish government, as jobs that could have been at risk now have a better chance of being safeguarded, provided the outcome of Saab's in-court reorganization.
With this sale moving forward, Koenigsegg will be keen to avoid mistakes made by other manufacturers in the past. The merger between Daimler and Chrysler saw the combination of a performance vehicle automaker with a volume seller. Significant problems arose when the German car company showed strong reluctance at sharing technology with their high-volume American counterpart.
Of the deal, Saab Managing Director Jan Åke Jonsson said, "Today's announcement is great news for Saab's current and future customers, dealers, suppliers and employees around the globe."

จริงๆแล้วไม่น่าจะดีใจเพราะคนเอเชียด้วยกันเพิ่งพลาดโอกาสการเป็นเจ้าของ SAAB
แต่ลึกๆแล้วถ้าให้เดาว่าใครจะปรนนิบัติต่อ SAAB ได้ดีกว่ากัน ผมก็คงขอให้ Koenigsegg ได้ SAAB ไปครองดีกว่า
อย่างน้อยผมรู้สึกว่าสองค่ายนี้มีความบ้าซ่อนอยู่ในการทำรถในสไตล์ที่คล้ายๆกัน และ Koenigsegg น่าจะได้ประโยชน์จากความปลอดภัยและการออกแบบโครงสร้างของ SAAB ส่วน SAAB นั้นคงไม่ได้อะไรจาก Koenigsegg เพราะคงไม่บ้าทำรถซูเปอร์คาร์มาขายแข่ง แต่รถสปอร์ตล่ะก็ไม่แน่อาจจะได้เห็นกัน

Koenigsegg to Buy Saab, Returning Carmaker to Sweden (Update1)

June 16 (Bloomberg) -- Koenigsegg Automotive AB, a maker of $1.2 million high-performance sports cars, won the bidding for General Motors Corp?s Saab Automobile AB unit, returning the automaker to Swedish control after almost two decades.
The sale is tied to a $600 million loan by the European Investment Bank that?s backed by the Swedish government, General Motors spokesman Chris Preuss said by telephone today. GM agreed to provide engine and other technology for a limited time. The companies didn?t provide financial details of the deal.
Taking over Saab will catapult Koenigsegg from a supercar niche into the automotive mass market, adding Saab station wagons to Koenigsegg cars that command speeds of close to 400 kilometers (250 miles) an hour. Koenigsegg inherits a company that?s been unprofitable for most of GM?s 20 years of ownership and employs about 100 times Koenigegg?s workforce of 45.
?It?s a great relief for all the employees and our members,? Anette Hellgren, a Saab union representative on the company board, said by telephone today. ?Koenigsegg is a company of entrepreneurs and they know how to build brands in the automobile industry.?
GM bought Saab in two stages from the Wallenberg family, starting in 1990. GM, which has been operating under U.S. bankruptcy protection since the beginning of June, has been looking for a buyer for Saab since saying in February that it was breaking ties with the division.
Loan Guarantees
The deal with the super-car maker, founded by Christian von Koenigsegg in 1994, may help Saab, which is also under protection from creditors, gain support from the Swedish government. Swedish Industry Ministry State Secretary Joeran Haegglund said on June 11 that the government is ?well prepared? to discuss loan guarantees with Saab?s new owner.
Koenigsegg spokeswoman Halldora von Koenigsegg, the wife of the founder, said the parties cannot discuss details of the transaction before all negotiations are completed. Discussions are continuing on the loan and financial details, she said.
Saab said on April 6 that it aims to secure about $1 billion in financing from the European Investment Bank and GM to help achieve positive cash flow by 2011. The carmaker is seeking an agreement with creditors to pay back 25 percent of about 10 billion Swedish kronor ($1.28 billion) owed and will present the outcome of talks to a court June 17.
Saab spokeswoman Gunilla Gustavs said by telephone that ?everyone is confident in getting access to the EIB loan? and that the Swedish government has been involved in the sale ?along the whole way.?
Dwindling Sales
Saab is separate from Saab AB, the Swedish maker of the Gripen fighter jet and other defense products. In 2000, GM took full control of Saab Automobile, which racked up an operating loss of 16.5 billion kronor in the five years until 2008.
Saab employs about 4,100 people in Sweden and sold fewer than 100,000 cars last year. Its popularity peaked in the 1980s, when the 900 model drew buyers seeking a European car that stood for technical innovation, safety, luxury and idiosyncratic design. Saab was the first carmaker with side-impact protection systems in 1972 and spearheaded turbo-charged engines.
Under Koenigsegg, Saab will return production of the larger 9-5 model to its main factory in Trollhaettan from Ruesselsheim in Germany, Preuss said. Saab also makes the smaller 9-3 model, and its cars come as convertibles, sedans and station wagons.
?This sounds great,? said Rolf Berglund, one of the three presidents of Saab?s Ledarna, a white-collar union of company managers. ?It?s good news they plan to keep production in Sweden.?
The carmaker, which had 0.4 percent of the European market last year, lost about 3 billion kronor in 2008 and expects a similar deficit in 2009, according to court documents.
Koenigsegg, based in Aengelholm, in southern Sweden, also makes two models. The CCX costs $1 million and the CCXR, which can run on biofuel, costs $1.2 million. The CCX can accelerate to 200 km/h in 9.8 seconds, according to the company?s Web site.
Deutsche Bank AG advised GM on the sale of Saab.

แต่วอลโว่ไม่ขาย โดยให้เหตุผลว่า"เพราะประวัติการพัฒนารถจีนเน้นการลอกเลียนแบบแทนที่จะสร้างคุณค่าใหม่ด้วยตนเอง"
สิ่งที่วอลโว่พูดมา ไม่ต่างอะไรกับกำลังตัดหัวเสียบประจานจีนดีๆนี่เอง
ผมได้ยี่ห้อรถในดวงใจขึ้นมาอีก 1 ยี่ห้อแล้ว ;D ;D

ส่วนผมใจหนึ่งก็ดีใจนะ อีกใจก็เสียดาย เพราะยังไงๆ จีน ก็เป็นเอเซียเหมือนกับเรา ถ้าพูดแล้วไทยใกล้ชิดกับจีน มากกว่าสวีเดนแน่นอน แต่ก็ดีใจที่ได้ Koenigsegg เนื่องจากว่าคงเกื้อกูลกันได้มากกว่าจีน

แล้ว 9-5 ตัวที่กำลังจะวางตลาดปีหน้า ก็ยังเป็นพื้นฐานจาก GM อยู่ซิครับ อย่างนั้นน่าจับตา 9-3 รุ่นใหม่ น่าจะมีอะไรที่แสดงความเป็นตัวตนของตัวเองออกมาชัดเจนอีกซักครั้งนะครับ ( หลังๆดูด้อยๆลงไปจากมาตรฐานของ saab ไปหน่อยครับ )

จำกระทู้เก่าๆที่ผมเคยพูดไว้ได้มั๊ยครับว่า....คนที่จ้องจะเอา saab เขารอ GM ล้มละลายครับ.....แม่นอย่างพยากรณ์ไว้มั๊ยหล่ะครับ
งานนี้ผมเดาเล่นๆว่า รัฐบาลเขาแบล็กอัพใ้ห้แน่ๆ ;D
จริงๆ SAAB = สปอร์ตซีดานนะครับ....ยิ่งมาอยู่ในมือของบริษัทที่ทำแต่รถสปอร์ต รับรองเลยว่า เจนหน้าของซาบ มันจะยิ่งกว่าตำนานอีกครับท่าน
ปัญหาไม่ได้อยู่ที่บริษัทแม่แล้ว อยู่ที่ดีลเลอร์ในบ้านเราว่าจะทำตลาดให้มันถึงใจ หรือจะปล่อยให้มันลุ่มๆดอนๆ ต่อไป มากกว่านะ

หลายคนอาจจะมองว่า Audi มี RS4อยู่แล้วจะเอา Imprezaมาทำไม
รถสเกลลูกค้าระดับกลางอย่าง VW ก็มีอยู่แล้ว จะเอามาทำไม
ผมก็ไม่รู้ และก็ไม่รุ้เหมือนกันว่าทั้งๆที่ Porsche ครอง VW Group และใต้ VW Group คือ Audi
แล้วทำไม มันถึงมีรถอย่าง Gallardo, R8 V10, และ 911 ที่น่าจะอยู่ใน segment เดียวกัน
และสองในนั้นก็มีรูปแบบที่เกือบเหมือนกันในการจัดวางเครื่องและแม้แต่ตัวเครื่องเอง
