It teams a 2.1-litre twin-turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine to a gearbox-mounted electric motor, and allows the car 175kW of power and a whopping 750Nm of torque from a standstill. When you plant your foot, all that pulling power is clearly evident. The turbos and electric motor combine for strong pulling power low in the rev-range. The car surges forward and shifts up through the seven gears with ease. It's not overly quiet, though, with diesel grumble clearly noticeable in the cabin. It's a relatively small capacity hybrid, in that you can drive a maximum of about 1.5km on electricity alone, and only at speeds less than 30km/h. It will, however, switch from diesel to electric power as you coast down a hill, and there's hardly any vibration as the diesel engine re-fires. We did notice that the ride of the E300 seemed slightly harsher over bumps, possibly because it weighs about 100 kilograms more than the equivalent diesel-only model.
