"Mazda Sales (Thailand) is preparing to return to the sport-utility vehicle (SUV) market with a new vehicle in late 2012 or early 2013.
Company executives confirmed the Japanese company is looking at building the CX-5 crossover at its Thai production facility where the BT-50 pickup, Mazda2 and 3 passenger cars are currently made.
The CX-5 will make its world premiere at September's Frankfurt motor show and was first previewed in the Minagi concept show in Geneva earlier this year. Sources say the CX-5 to hit the market will look much the same as the Minagi version.
The Tribute was Mazda's last effort in the Thai SUV segment, expiring three years ago.
The engine has yet to be finalised, though Thai product planners are keen on a 2-litre engine equipped with the brand's Skyactiv fuel-saving technologies that will also be used for the new Mazda3 sedan and hatchback when they are replaced in 2013-14.
With such a petrol engine, the CX-5 is expected to steal shares from the basic Honda CR-V priced in the range of 1 million to 1.2 million baht."
