I do not see what wrong with going nostalgic. Mid century/ MADMEN era designs have been among the finest and timeless design. Good thing is that they did not go for overly futuristic theme that they have been doing with their rice-burner range (i.e. boring corolla and camry).
A mid-century throwback (in this case, the reinterpretation of 2000GT's mid 1960s design) is a good move. 'Stang, Camaro and Challenger are notable examples. The overly modern design would have destroyed the very concept of those muscles. Ford already gave us lessons when they created the third generation Mustang.
