Traditionally, the "new models" come out in the fall, meaning that 2013 models come out in September/October of 2012. I suspect this is because:
Dealers and manufacturers have a few more chances to sell a 2013 model at full price, as they don't typically offer big discounts on cars that they've got a whole year to sell (why discount now when you've got 12 months?).
A new model which debuts between November and January would be easy for consumers to miss, as most people are focused on the holidays during this time of year.
There have also been early model releases for regulatory reasons. For example, if there are new fuel economy regulations beginning in 2016 that will make your vehicle more expensive, a good "trick" is to release the 2015 model in March of 2014. This is a full 6 months earlier than normal, but that means the manufacturer has two complete summer selling seasons to sell the "new" model before the rules come out and change pricing.
The scenario I'm describing has happened a few times before, but I'm not coming up with an example right now...still, this is another reason to do an early debut.
